Hairspray Manila: A Review

We came to Star Theater last Wednesday for the Hairspray preview. Thanks to the kind people of Atlantis Production for inviting us and also to Lorna for giving us this opportunity to watch it first hand.

Ok I'll just make this review brief since I don't really want to spoil everyone. First of all, if you already watched the film version, don't expect that they are really the same. The 2007 movie is completely different to the live version. Some songs are deleted in the movie's final cut though they also included new songs. The stage version has so many things to offer to everyone including breathtaking dance moves and soulful song numbers.

On the actors side, I commend Madel for her portrayal of Tracy Turnblad. She really embodies the persona of a cheerfull and hip girl of Baltimore. Despite the size and weight, Madel shows everyone that she can groove just like the others who weigh less than her. And with this performance, Madel became an overnight superstar just like the role she plays and won the hearts of everyone in the theater. Everybody starts to cheer when Edna came on the scene. Mr. Michel De Mesa did a very well portrayal of Tracy's over weight mother. Well what do you expect from a Michael De Mesa. He really look like Divine who is the very first actor that portrayed Edna in the Hairspray film. Though it is really evident that sometimes Michael use natural male voice, it is completel intentional to add up on the hilarity of the character, which really works. And lastly, I'm touched by Miss Dulce's rendition of I know Where I've Been. I never thought Miss Dulce will become a soul singer. We know her for being a generic local belter. But after Hairspray, she is already a certified R&B songstress.

After last year's hit Avenue Q and this year's phenomenal musical Cinderella, Director Bobby Garcia never failed everyone for giving a quality broadway based musicals. It is really enough to know that he is the brains behind this production to be sure that this musical will give you not only quality entertainment but also high class production. I congratulate Mr. Bobby and Atlantis for giving us this rare opportunity to watch a Tony award winning musical.

So for those who haven't bought their tickets yet, go to the nearest Ticketworld outlet now or call 892-7078. This is just a limited engagement that will run from November 16 - December 7 at Star CIty Star Theater, so don't you dare miss the chance to see this big fat comedy hit of broadway and be ready to shake your shimmy.

Totally agree. Madel, who is still a student at AdMU, was amazing. We look forward to watching her again on Opening Night (tonight already!) and also on the Nov. 23 (Sunday 8pm) show which we are hosting. Feel free to contact Tim at +0917-8735405 or email tliong@its.jnj.com for ticket bookings. Delivery of tickets available within Metro Manila.
